Being an early millennial and having grown up in the 90s, I used to often watch the iconic Taj Mahal Tea ad that featured Ustad Zakir Hussain – @zakirhq9 on TV. Set against the backdrop of the Taj Mahal, Ustad Zakir Hussain performed a mesmerizing riyaz in his tabla, ending with “Wah Taj Boliye!” as a response to “Wah Ustad Wah!”.
A young man with curly locks, bobbing his head while playing the tabla invoked a certain level of curiosity in me. That’s how I came to know about him – a legendary Tabla player and a flag-bearer of Indian Classical Music.
India, the Indian classical music and the entire world will sorely miss him. He may be no more, but his tabla beats will resonate in the universe forever.
